The trees that walk

Why do I love trees so much?! They are simply one of the most magical things we encounter and we do not respect the life it gives us nor the age and the beauty enough. So I decided that I could use this space to blog about the things I learn about the beauty held in nature especially in the materials we use to create the hand made and ethically sourced materials found in Victoria's Treasure Corner designs.

I thought the best place to start would be with the whimsical and harry potter inspiting Socratea exorrhiza. This is a palm native to rainforests in tropical Central and South America. The tree supposedly “walks” from shade to sunlight by growing roots in the direction it wants to travel, and then allowing the old roots to lift into the air and die!

Now I was intrigued and excited when I found this! Yes massively sceptical I sought out to research and investigate who discovered this and how was it documented. Has is been disproved or in fact is it proven that here in this modern age we still hold some magic in this world and their are actual moving trees. Or would I find a metaphorical meaning behind the story of the walking trees.

With most things in life, you will reach a point where you must collate the information you hold with what your guts tell you and then come to a conclusion of your own.

With science comes explanation, however science can only go so far. Science can not contain or explain a human soul, but it can explain and describe in massive detail the body in which we live. I have found when learning about nature and the wonders of it, science is a valuable key to understanding but it can also hinder if it is to be relied upon solely.

So In a very short summary, Do I believe walking trees exist. Yes they I believe they absolutely do. These trees may not walk around as we would dream like something from a magical fairy tale. You wont see an uprising of trees marching like something from Lord of the rings, however the Socratea exorrhiza Tree has been of particular interest to studies because of its root structure which do appear above surface level. Their have been many theories to prove and also disprove that this tree in particular does or does not move. You will have to decide for yourself, from what I have learned both from studies performed by others research and combined with my own life experiences, I would whole heartedly say we underestimate the power of nature and its habits on a daily basis. The world is still full of magical mysteries which can not be explained away with science and studies alone. Trees move/migrate/shift and relocate in their own amazing way, but the S. exorrhiza is one of the boldest of them all using its roots to pull itself along and shift its path right in front of our eyes.

Their is magic left here.
